Well, I am digging this but shaking in my boots at the amount of work that would be involved... haha! I too always focus on the characters and neglect the background. I'm going to try to jump on board at least one of these with you. (Also, WELL DONE! I was noticing alllll the details in the shelves and on the table!!)

THANK YOU!

Omg...I'm shaking in my boots too! ha! Breaking it out into the steps helped, but wow I really have to think differently than I'm used to...

Also when I think about your work, I think about really colorful, rich backgrounds!

Well thank you, but I can’t wait to show you what I’m working on now because I think I stepped it up!!💪🏻

Sometimes I feel like the only illustrator in the world who loves doing backgrounds 😂 This looks like a great approach, and a really smart way to make studies your own! Loving your first go at it. I am so going to use FILMGRAB now.

LOL take that and RUN with it! Pinterest doesn't even like showing me stuff with backgrounds (ha!) And thank you!! It took me a while to decide how I wanted to structure this whole thing. I might start the next one today! 😬 —ride the high of finishing the last one! FILMGRAB was such a happy find!

Love this idea. That film still site is gold. I feel the same need on backgrounds and value. Great post 💪

Thanks Jacob!! 💪 This will probably take me the rest of the year to complete ha! But that's ok!

Right, that site is awesome!

Amazing challenge as always! I too am bad at backgrounds and values so this would be great. I will definitely incorporate into my practice! Since the new film still is in colour are we supposed to do a color study or just a black and white value study ?

Expand full comment

Yay! Glad you want to join in! We WILL get better at backgrounds and value! ha!

And it's up to you for the study! I think it's easier to see/understand the values by doing the study in b/w (I converted it to grayscale for my own reference). And I haven't decided yet if I'll do my own illustration (inspired by the study) in color or b/w yet. 🤔

Also, yes to a zoom.

I am also shaking in my boots 🥾 🥾 but already work a lot from movies so why in the world would I reject this opportunity to get extra motivation and accountability along the way??? So yes, definitely up for this. Is this madness as I’ll have full childcare all summer? Yes. Can I make it all happen? Yes. Yes. Let’s do this!!

Ahhh yay!! I've just started the next study! (the wes anderson one at the end of the post) Let's gooooo! Do you have any favorite "go to" movies?

But I also LOVE the Wes A one you’ve picked, such strong lines. We’re in for a treat!! What sort of time line are we talking about? I’m thinking I need a deadline to organise my time. Sorry if you’ve mentioned this already…

I didn't mention it because I wasn't sure how quickly I could get to all of them, BUT based on how much time I was able to spend on this first one, ideally I'd like to get through one round every month.

Yes!!!!! I’m already working on the Little Women scene in the attic and a scene of Pride and Prejudice.

I love this!!! I love using film stills, they are also amazing composition inspiration for me. I’m excited about that site you shared- it’s going to get a lot of use around here. I hope to join in on this challenge as well because backyards are also tough for me, a character with no background is my happy place 🙈 This first piece is amazing- your final illustration has so much life!!

Expand full comment

Ahhh thank you! Keeping the life in a final illustration is TOUGH, so that is such a compliment! 😊 I'm so happy to have found FILMGRAB haha, and I understand, I would much rather just draw a character on a white background too. I love spot illustrations! :)

Please do join in!

This is so much fun! It is a bit intimidating how thoughtful this is, but I think that leads to deep work and improvement!

Thank you! Yeah...this one got waaaaay more complex than the previous challenge. ha

I want to do it too, let’s be accountability buddies!

Ok, Adam. You’re on! I’m going to pick scenes from six films I love and then we can follow Kayla along on the 7th as she suggested. We’ll have to figure out timing & deadlines, but YES!
