How lucky you got to take a class with Chris! I’m a huge fan. Your Leon turned out wonderfully, btw. :)
I work in 3D all the time, and I absolutely love it. Yes, I am definitely a hoarder when it comes to supplies and I "need” or rather “justify” renting a large studio to be able to keep everything. It helps me to have stations and different workspaces and storage solutions to keep me bopping around for the different steps and also to limit my hoarding. Thanks for sharing your 3D experience!
Thank you! And it was such a great experience; Chris is the sweetest.
I was spying on some of your 3D work on IG earlier this month! haha SO GOOD! Having the different stations set up in your studio is a good idea. Seems like the best way to do it honestly! Otherwise cleaning up, putting things away, getting other things out, etc. would be so annoying every time you needed to switch tasks.
Do you feel like it's helped you with character development for Leon? Seems like such a brilliant way to get more comfortable drawing them from all sorts of angles.
Yes, I think in person was important for this because we needed a lot of hands on help. haha And YES it definitely makes me better at character development! Making the 3D version forced me to think about all of the angles, the bulk, the curves, how they all work together, etc. And now I have a model I can turn and use for drawing reference. :)
This is soooo cool! I want to take this class now. It seems like in-person instruction would be the only way to learn something like this and what a glorious outcome!
Leon turned out so well! I used to work in 3D (the computer kind, not sculpture) and I think it helped me a ton with my 2D and book visualization but so not my thing. That being said, I would have jumped at this workshop too. I’ve always loved Chris’s work. So cool that you had this experience!
What a treat to take this workshop! I am a big fan of his. Your Lion came out great! I very much enjoy working in 3D and I plan on doing some more soon. But you are absolutely right, you need space to spread out and to store things... And I admittedly try to hide my hoarding tendencies from my husband. But it is so much fun to make a little character aint it? Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Thank you! I really am incredibly proud of Leon! I can't believe I made something—shows how good of a teacher Chris is. And yes, phew.....I still feel like I'm cleaning bits of foam off my desk haha
This is the absolute coolest! I love Leon so much! Will you do more? Are you familiar with Baek Hee-na? She also builds 3D art that she photographs for picture books. Super inspiring. I sometimes think about giving it a try myself, but where would I put everything? Paper is so much easier to stack and store! 😂
Ah thank you!! Yes I think I will do more! Especially when I'm working on a book and need a good character reference to sit in front of me. Plus I think it would be cool go bring a long to school visits! The biggest hurdle for me isn't even the time and energy it takes to do it, it's the storage like you said! haha
Thank you for the delightful newsletter! It's so interesting to see your character translated into 3D form. Taking an in-person workshop seems like the best way to learn and how exciting to take a class with Chris! Will you be creating more 3D pieces?
Thank you!! It reminded me how much you get out of an in person class...both from the instruction and from your peers! 10/10 would recommend if you ever get the chance! And I think I will! I just have to make the time for it haha. Making 3D versions of characters will be extremely helpful for drawing reference!

Ha! I was just going to put a link to your Substack here, Jen! LOL!

Oh cool! Every once in a while I think I want to try and model something on the computer, but I have yet to try. It seems so handy!

I'll look up Beak Hee-na!
Looks like such an amazing class!

We need a magic wand to create more hours in our creative days!
3D Leon is BEYOND awesome, Kayla - as is this fabulous post - thank you for taking me on such an exciting journey through your process.
Also: I've written this in my journal - "It all came together in the end. (apply this to all forms of art)."
YESSSSSSSSS!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And thank you!!! I'm really proud of how he came out. :)
Ha! I wrote it down too! It's hard to remember (and see the end) sometimes when you're in the throws of the process.😜
